WHAT What is the main theme, story or key idea?
Hoax is a card based social bluffing game for 3 – 6 players who compete to inherit the vast fortune of the recently deceased business tycoon, Hector Vargas.
HOWHow do the key mechanics and ideas work?
During a game of Hoax, each player attempts to keep their own identity a secret whilst discovering the identities of their fellow players. A number of actions can be made on a turn such as claiming to be a specific character (in order to activate their unique privilege ability). However, players can choose to lie about which character they are in order to use privilege abilities that will benefit them the most. Other actions can include investigating other players to discover clues as to their identity and ultimately accusing players to eliminate them from the game. As rounds play out, resources will be gathered such as cash, prestige and evidence which must be spent to perform investigations. During any claim, another player can announce “Hoax!” if they wish to call out a bluff. The remaining participants will then vote as to whether or not they agree with the bluff. However, if it turns out that the accused player was telling the truth, they will win the game.
WHY Why is Hoax worth your time?
Hoax is an excellent bluffing game where players will have to make difficult decisions when choosing whether to lie or tell the truth. The path to victory is never clear and making any accusation of “Hoax” is risky as it could easily win another player the game.
