Onitama

WHAT What is the main theme, story or key idea?
Onitama is a two-player abstract game which combines the elegance and simplicity of martial arts with the strategic planning of a game of chess.
HOWHow do the key mechanics and ideas work?
Each player chooses 5 pawns of one colour which consists of a master and four students. The goal for each player is to capture the opponents master pawn. To move one of their pieces, players play movement cards from their hand which indicate where players can position their pawn. If a player’s pawn moves onto a square occupied by an opponent’s pawn, then the opponents pawn is captured and removed from the game. After the movement phase, the player draws new movement cards and exchanges one card with their opponent.
WHY Why is Onitama worth your time?
Onitama is an easy to learn tactical game that resembles chess with players moving pawn pieces across a board. However, there’s a lot of strategy to moves as for example, a player could choose to hold on to a movement card that would be particularly useful for their opponent.
